hi friends. we havent been near a computer for a little while. our trip has been accelerating since we left the bay islands of honduras. i am going to recap on that because it was so cool. we were there for a week and became certified open water divers! our dive school was fantastic, our room was right on the carribean and the school had their own dock. the reggae music began at 7:30 every morning just outside our room. it helped us get up for the early morning dives. our dive intructor, jesper was a danish soon-to-be-doctor who has dived all over the world. when we arrived i was had some hyperactive paranoia. before we entered confined waters i was thinking, what if i hold my breath, i am going to experience a lung rupture. i kept telling abel he had better be ready to save my life. well, i didnt hold my breath. it is the most natural thing to just keep breathing no matter what, and sometimes to slow down a little and breath more deeply. diving is like flying under water. abel and i would float past one another. all you can hear is your own breath in and out of the regulator. it is actually so serene. the fish are quite entertaining with their busy little lives in the coral labyrinths. i kept imagining that all the fish had different voices, no i am not crazy, just imaginative i guess. i imagined what accents they would have and i would ask them different questions in my head as we floated around them. it really felt like under water space. we learned to control our breath and we could navigate around easily after a day or so. we went as deep as 60ft below sea level. we had a glimpse of a ship wreck down there. that all feels like a dream now. we took the big princess boat back to mainland honduras. everyone gets sick on the boat. they pass out vomit bags first thing. abel and i managed okay. but you feel like you are at sea for the rest of the day. we cruised through honduras. it was so hot that one night we took 6 rinse off cold showers in a 20 hour period. we have been in el salvador for 3 days now. it is wonderful. i love the people here. i feel like i am right at home with the 80s disco music on the bus and the little campesino man sitting next to me with his machete in an ornate leather case. just picture this salvadoran man with one visible tooth and the best laugh lines holding my mandolin on his lap on the bus. pretty wild. we stayed last night in a town called happiness. if happiness were a town, this is it. the town smiles from every corner. the children are so happy here. at night everyone gathers to play or watch the soccer games. alegria is one of the most enchanting places i have been on this trip. it is this tiny pueblito at the base of a volcano. it is inundated with flowers, orange trees, and coffee plants. abel and i hiked to a crater lake. it was emerald green. we ate some oranges we bought from little kids on the roadside and made whistles out of the plants we recognize now. we also ate some not so ripe guavas from the trees. we had read in the newspaper that the army was fumigating the rural towns to combat dengue. well, lucky us we got to experience this. they even fumigated the home where we were staying. the streets are filled with the smoke of pesticides and everyone evacuates their homes. we had to fan the smoke out of our room with towels. in the morning we noticed some cockroaches still laying on their backs wriggling their legs in the air. pobrecitos! we also had the best entertainment that evening from the two little boys living in the house. ulyses and victor. 9 and 5 yrs old. we sang la cucuracha, and played mission impossible hide and seek for what seemed like hours. we were all laughing so hard. ulyses and i had a tongue twister off. we also spent some time talking back and forth like donald duck. today we had a hard time saying goodbye. the woman of the house made us fresh squeezed oj and we played some soccer with the boys. we wanted to leave behind all our things and stick the little boys in our backpacks. we will post some pictures of them and the other travels soon. as for now, we are in san salvador. we saw some sweet break dancing today. this is common with the youth, they form circles and show eachother their skills. from the streets to the skills. its really powerful stuff to watch. now we are in a mall. yes a giant mall that is beside another giant mall. san salvador is so modernized. we just landed in another world. so in salvador do as salvadorans do. we are going to treat ourselves to the cine tonight. superman regresa!
signing off,
love you all,
trishy
