are we dreaming? Print E-mail

hey everyone!
abel and i are in antigua now. it is a post colonial beauty, architectually speaking. but we donīt feel the need to stay too long, because the real guatemala seems to be obscured here by the travelers and middle class locals. we did have a phenomenal evening our first night here. we happened to catch the buena vista social club performing their pure cuban salsa rhythms in a small seafood restaurant. yes, its true!!! although we had to continue looking at our hands to reassure ourselves that we werenīt dreaming it all up. that has happened so many times during our travels. are we dreaming? perhaps we are. but some things are not so dreamlike in this world, especially in this corner of the world. we visited a pueblo near lago atitlan that has been crushed by landslides when the hurricane stan hit in october. 200 people died. homes were swallowed by mud. many children are left homeless and parentless. we met some of them, a gaggle of little lost boys. they hold liquid sorrow in their eyes. it is heartbreaking. i am also writing this email in a response to an update gus just sent me on el salvador. their is a climate of terror rising there due to social and economic decisions that will further oppress the majority of salvadorans. it is becoming quite terrifying there. thanks gus for doing that research and sharing it with us. if any of you could pass along any information like this regarding honduras/elsalvador/nicaragua we would appreciate being informed before we unknowingly end up in the wrong place at the wrong time.
thanks everyone. please continue working for peace in whatever way you can.
take care,
trishy
