well yesterday we experienced a simple twist of fate. we were all ready to leave xela to visit lago atitlan for a week, when we thought it would be best to check in with the director of the school before taking off. we were quite surprised to discover that they made space for us and were finding us families to stay with. so within 20 minutes we had gathered our packs and things and were introduced to our respective families. we spent last night in our new homes. it is quite a different reality, living with a family. mine is wonderful, i will write more about them later because i have a lot to say. abel will give a more full report on his family too within a few days. today we attended our orientation in the morning and watched a heartbreaking video on the school or americas (school of assassins) in fort benning, georgia. i was brought to tears at seeing the images. somehow the words genocide and massacre and war have lost their impact on me, but when i see images of bodies and skeletons they are permanently imprinted behind my eyes. the recent and current struggles of central america are so sad, yet there continues to be new groups of activists and organizers for human rights.
