hi friends and family. thanks for all the emails. i love you with all my heart :) thanks mommy. lets see. i have had poetry running through me these days , so much music! as we pass through villages and wait in bus stations and walk through towns listening to garifuna (the local belizean/african language) and the kids walking to school in their uniforms. we stayed only four days at the hidden falls farm. abel and i looked at one another with curiosity as the bus dropped us off literally on the side of the highway. the farm was beautiful. acres and acres of pineapple, which are quite an aggressive plant, and mango and the mamey fruit which i tried for the first time, and enough bananas to drive us bananas :) the bugs were crazy. we have our battle scars all over our bodies. but our mosquito net has really been an asset. at night when we were eating dinner i think we dined on some of the big crunchy bugs that dive bombed into our plates. sometimes we even used them as amo. at the farm we bathed in the pool at the base of a 25ft. waterfall surrounded by jungle. and one night we were bathing when we first discovered the fire flies. they would arrive everynight before 7pm when we were at the farm..that is when night would fall and we would also start feeling tired. the days are long and filled with adventure. we are always awake before 7. so anyhow, we left the farm on monday. it wasn't a completely good fit for us. we felt a little isolated from community, as it was just us and the couple that was hosting us and their 2 dogs. there were a few things that didn't quite feel comfortable for us, so we were eager to see more of the beautiful country. and belize is amazing. the culture was different in dangriga, which more central/southern than it was in belmopan and we can't really say much about san ignacio because we just arrived today. in dangriga we recieved lots of smiles. we have shared in many a ecological discussion with the local people, they certainly have an ecological mindfulness which is so refreshing! yesterday we hiked through the jungle and saw the sacred cieba trees, a few tropical birds, too many mosquitos, and this huge red and black snake. we hiked into a cave once inhabited by the mayan people. it had the coolest stalagmites/tites. and the whole while we hiked to the sound of trickling water under the earth. it was a very sacred experience for me. when we first looked back we could see the opening of the cave and the light and green of the jungle spilling into it's mouth. it was like a fairytale. i keep thinking i am in a giant story book, and the pages just keep turning.
well i love you all. tomorrow we cross the border into guatemala, so perhaps you will recieve some future emails in spanglish!
go slow

Only a week into our journey, with so many feelings and thoughts, it seems like it has been a month one minute and a day another minute. I've been thinking about you all a lot as well as my life in general (no grand conclusions yet.) We have been taking it pretty easy, you have to in this heat, but I love it. The farm wasn't quite what we where looking for so we will be crossing into Guatemala manana por la manana. Belize has been great! Relaxed like Latin America, with the ease of English. However, I'm looking forward to the Spanish and Myan ruins. Trisha is a great traveling partner; she has a way with people. -Abel- |

hey friends! we stepped off the plane into a balmy and palmy belize city. things are so chill here. we have been welcomed by the people. the first fella who befriended us in the water taxi terminal declared that we were going to have a "fucking good time, man." mmmhhhmmm...we are staying on a little island, and island living is super sweet. just the necessities...pineapple, rice and beans in the mornin, a little cabin near the caribean sea, and a light breeze to balance out the heat. the motto on caye caulker is "go slow" so that is what we are doing. slowly feeling right at home. today we snorkeled in the largest barrier reef in the western hemisphere, second largest in the world. we touched sting rays, and nurse sharks. we saw maroon lichen and eels and brilliantly colored fishies. tomorrow we leave and begin our trek to the farm. everyone says southern belize is really cool and different from here...more drums and jungles and caves. we will write again when we have the opportunity, but may be out of touch for atleast the next week or so. we love you all. and remember, go slow.
ps. lichen you would love the frigit birds here! |
